Scientists have found out what it is like on Earth. They do this with ground-based telescopes, space shuttle missions, satellites, sounding rockets, high-altitude aircrafts and computer models. When they are finished measuring where the sun is in the sky at any given time of day for any given location on Earth’s surface, they know how bright it is that place.
That brightness of the sun on earth’s surface is called solar constant. It has a value of 1366 watts per square meter at the distance from Earth to where the sun shines brightest.
If you had a one meter by one meter solar panel that was 100% efficient standing perpendicular to the sun, it would produce 1,366 watts of energy. That is enough energy to power a blow dryer and dry your hair!
However, this is for the full spectrum of the sun. We are only concerned with visible light, so we need to adjust this number to account for only what the eye can see. The way to do that is either by solving an integration problem or just taking our word for it.
For our sun’s black body temperature of 5778 K, the answer is 93. For every watt our sun creates, it produces 93 lumens of visible light. So at earth’s orbit, each square meter will get 127,000 lumens from our sun!
So be warned – the sun is very bright and it will damage your eyes if you stare at it. You must take precautions and get sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your eyes and skin.
Now let’s find the area of a sphere that has a radius corresponding to earth’s distance from the sun. So with the radius equal to 92.96 million miles, one astronomical unit, or 149.6 billion meters, the area is 281,229,000,000,000 , 000 000 000 000 or 281.2 sextillion square meters. Now we just multiply that with 127 thousand lumens per square meter and we get 35 730 trillion trillion trillion lumens.
Our sun gives off a lot of light. It is a little brighter than the brightest head lamp. I don’t want to be the one buying the batteries for it because then they would wear out quickly. We could use rechargeable lithium ion batteries that are solar-powered!
