In this blog, we will suggest how to light up your acrylic with led lights.
Engraving starts with a design on the acrylic surface. You use a pen that can write on any surface and put the mirror image of your design on the front. Then you trace it to the back. When you are finished tracing, you remove your design from the front. Now put it on a soft surface like a towel and start to engrave!
You can use a Dremel to make engravings. You should start by drawing the lines of the shape you want to make, and then using an engraving tool with an oval head. This will allow you to create straight lines. Then, fill in the design with an engraving tool that has a round head. The round head makes it possible for you to engrave very accurately. Make sure that your depth is equal: if you accidentally dig deep, a bright spot will show up when light reflects off of it.
LED strips can be cut to the size you want. This is the first thing to do before attaching the LED strip to acrylic. Test it after putting it on, because if there are any problems with it, you will lose all of your work. We glue using a hot glue gun. Place the LED strip against the bottom edge of the plexiglass. Make sure that all of the LEDs are in one straight line on top of it. Then put tape over them so they don’t move while you’re gluing. When you are done, make sure to cover any parts of the LED strip that is touching it with glue and not exposed!
Transparent acrylic will only light up when there is an unevenness in the surface. For best effect, engrave on the back side of the sheet. Engraving can also mean that you need to sand the back with a fine grain sandpaper. You can engrave a drawing, lettering, or an image in the acrylic. You can make your own design on the computer and print it out. Keep in mind that you print the design in mirror image, if you stick the design on the acrylic, you can trace it on the back of the sheet. If you then look at the front of your sheet with your design printed on it, then people will see your original version of what is printed!
To engrave, first you transfer your design to the acrylic sheet. You use a marker pen that can write on any surface. Then you glue the mirror-printed design onto the acrylic surface and trace it with a pencil on the back side of it. Place a terry towel over the acrylic sheet so that it is soft when engraving. The chemical reaction will remove material and leave a clear, frosted or shiny surface.
A more traditional method of engraving acrylic is known as chemical milling where the material is milled in various ways by hand using a “finger” that has been dipped into acid and then applied to the plastic until it takes on a desired shape. Chemical milling can also be done with a machine that is similar to a milling cutter.
